This One Airsoft Gun Part Will Give a Big Boost to FPS

Do you love your AEG, but wish it offered just a little bit more in terms of power, specifically FPS?

There is one airsoft gun part you can (relatively) easily install (or upgrade) that should give you a boost.

It’s called a tight-bore barrel. Here’s what you need to know.

How It Works

Airsoft guns are made with two barrels, an outer barrel and an inner barrel. The outer barrel is cosmetic and serves to increase the realism of the platform.

The inner barrel, usually made from a brass alloy or from stainless steel, is the part through which the airsoft ammo (the BB) actually travels.

An airsoft gun’s barrel must also trap the expanding air behind the BB, either from the electrically driven piston or from the gas magazine, which in turn forces the BB out of the barrel.

Most airsoft guns are made with 6.04mm inner barrels, at least those that are of 6mm caliber. These standard barrels do an acceptable job of trapping the released compressed gas, but not a stellar job.

There are also tight-bore inner barrels, which have a narrower inside diameter of 6.03mm or in some cases even 6.02mm.

These barrels have less space between the BB and the bore itself, and are more effective at trapping gas behind it.

As such, installing one of these is a quick hack to enable you to upgrade the FPS of your airsoft gun, without doing anything with the battery, motor, or even gearbox.

There is one caveat, though. Because the barrel is tighter around the BB, there are more chances for the BB to contact it as it “rattles” down the bore.

This can in some places do a number on accuracy, and not in a good way. Many airsoft players relate that tight-bore barrels (while good for power) really shoot down accuracy.

So, this might not be a good upgrade if you’re a sniper. But if you run into a lot of CQB scenarios, you could do a lot worse.

Check the Product Specs

One thing to note before you go and replace your airsoft gun’s barrel on a whim: some airsoft guns, like the G&G Raider and select VFC Avalon and Lancer Tactical AEGs, already come with tight-bore barrels pre-installed.

So if yours already has one, these following airsoft gun parts might make better upgrades for FPS.

What Else to Replace?

If your airsoft gun already has a tight-bore inner barrel, consider replacing the following parts instead:

  • The gear box: Most quality airsoft guns are made with all-metal gearboxes that are fully upgradeable. Some, like certain Arcturus Airsoft guns, come with quick-change springs; you can swap out the spring and you won’t even need to change the whole gearbox to boost FPS.
  • The motor: Going for a more powerful motor with a higher RPM rating may be able to give you a quick boost to FPS.
  • The battery: If your AEG is LiPo-ready, you should seriously consider the upgrade. Lithium-polymer, better known as LiPo batteries, are lighter in weight, more compact, and deliver higher rates of discharge than both NiMH and NiCad batteries.
