Should I Buy or Construct a Standing Desk?

There has been a recent surge in the demand for standing desks, thanks to a recent study that showed how a sitting position could damage not only a person’s posture, but also how the metabolic rate and muscle activity is slowed down during that period. Due to the relatively high price of most stand-up desk, many people have now started making their own desks using standard standing desk converter kits and even posting the whole stand-up desk conversion process online.

While this may seem like a neat and novel idea, it may not be as amazing at it seems, and I’ll tell you why. But first, let’s look at the advantages of a desk and why you should consider one.

The Benefits of a Standing Desk

The most obvious benefit of a stehpult is the improvement in posture and muscle activity. You’re essentially preventing your back from getting a hunch and don’t have to subject your neck to awkward angles. Secondly, you’ll also be improving your blood flow and have a higher metabolic rate. By almost 3 times! But these are all the benefits you are already aware of. Right now, let’s focus on why buying a readymade desk is better than constructing one yourself.

Skill Set

First of all, not everyone can construct a standing desk on their own. Though there are numerous how-to guides available online, the problem is that all of them are specific to the author’s workstation. You need to realize that there are a lot of specifics when it comes to constructing something in regards to supporting a particular weight. For example, while the person typing the how-to guide may have an LCD monitor setup, you might be using a heavier monitor such as a CRT. Calculating the specific reaction force from the buckles that will be able to support the weight isn’t as simple as doing addition/subtraction.

No Guarantees or Quality Control

Question: Why are Chinese goods cheaper but less reliable than branded goods? Answer: Because they skip the expensive quality control phase. The thing is, most branded standing desks come with at least a 3 month warranty, which basically means you’ll be insured incase the desk fails to support the weight. The company will also be accountable for any damages done due to the desk’s inadequacy. But what’s the assurance when you are supporting thousands of dollars worth of machinery on a desk which has no guarantees or liabilities?

This is why I feel it is more practical to shell out a few more bucks and buy a desk instead of going for the long and tedious stand-up desk conversion process or buying cheap quality standing desk converter kits.
