Vivid Sydney 2026 is gonna light up the city from 22 May to 13 June, turning familiar streets and waterfronts into a vibrant dreamscape of lights and colours. And this year’s installations are bigger, brighter and bolder than ever! So, whether you’re visiting from overseas, flying in from another state or you’ve lived here your whole life, this year’s light installations truly deserve your attention!
All of them are free to experience, and most fit neatly into the popular ‘Vivid Light Walk’ route that snakes through key locations like Circular Quay, The Rocks, Barangaroo, Darling Harbour and Sydney CBD. While all 40+ installations are unique in their own way, here are the five standout Vivid Light installations you shouldn’t miss:
Lighting of the Sails: Opera Mundi
Location: Sydney Opera House, Bennelong Point
This is probably the most stunning, if not the most popular, Vivid Sydney installation— with surreal projections illuminating the Opera House sails. This year, French artist Yann Nguema, working with composer Mischa Blanos, projects a new work onto the Sydney Opera House sails. ‘Opera Mundi’ dives into the transformations of nature — land, sea and sky — that inspired Jørn Utzon’s original design for the Opera House.
Of course, it looks splendid from the foreshore, but Sydney Vivid Cruises stand out as the best way to take it all in. From the water, you get that perfect, intended perspective of the sails! Molecule of Light
Location: Walumil Lawns, Barangaroo
This installation by British artist Chris Levine is now officially the tallest installation in the history of Vivid Sydney. And yes, it’s definitely worth all the hype! After all, how can you not notice 23 metres of laser and sound, fusing single-frequency beams and geometric light patterns with a solfeggio soundscape (the ancient tonal frequencies supposedly connected to healing and meditation)?
Whether or not you buy into the science behind it, it’s still meditative in a way that most outdoor light installations aren’t!
Star-Bound: Vivid Sydney Drone Show
Location: Cockle Bay, Darling Harbour
The Vivid Sydney drone show was a cornerstone installation of the festival, but it was paused in 2025 due to safety concerns. So, 2026 marks its return under a new name, and the scale this year is bigger than any previous edition. A thousand drones turn the sky above Cockle Bay into a living canvas, accompanied by a magnificent score. The show explores repeating patterns in nature, from waves, stars and Fibonacci shells to other cosmic shapes.
Shows are at 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm from Sunday to Wednesday nights (excluding 7 June), and each performance lasts 10 minutes. So, check the schedule before you go because it doesn’t run every evening.
Obstacle
Location: Wulugul Walk, Barangaroo
If ‘Molecule of Light’ is Vivid Sydney’s tallest installation ever, then ‘Obstacle’ is its longest! This 45-metre LED corridor is an original Australian creation by Reelize Studio, where patterns flow and glide across the screens, synced to sound and encouraging you to walk alongside them! It’s also one of the more photogenic stops on the Light Walk, so don’t forget to snap those Instagram-worthy photos!
Laser Lightfall
Location: Cockle Bay, Darling Harbour
This is probably Australia’s, not just Sydney’s, most ambitious free outdoor laser event! It runs four sequences every hour from 6 pm to 11 pm, every single night of the festival. The choreographed beams sweep across the harbour sky in sequences that shift from a single colour into a full celestial spread.
Final Thoughts
 So, even though these five installations barely scratch the surface of what Vivid Sydney 2026 has to offer, they still capture very different sides of the festival. All five installations are free to explore and sit within the ‘Light Walk’ route.
